When I set up Leadership Learning Ltd, I wanted to show professionals how they could use their own experience to bring about real changes in their workplaces and spaces. Changes that at the frontline, often only they can see. I wanted to help them draw on their own knowledge, so they could understand (as I had over time) what leadership really was and how it might be used as a vehicle to implement things better. At the heart of this was the need to ‘help practitioners to see themselves as leaders’ and as already having the agency to resolve complex problems.
The Vision
I had this vision because when I was working as a practitioner, like so many other professionals, I never actually saw myself as a leader. I just got on with solving the different problems that arose without much thought. But the problem was, ‘I didn’t always know why I was doing what I was doing’. During this time, it’s fair to say that the whole concept of ‘leadership’ didn’t feature that greatly at all. It was only when I started learning about leadership as an academic, that I realised that leadership was nothing more than a process, and it had been at the heart of everything I’d ever done.
Challenging Assumptions
I sensed that if other practitioners could benefit from the same type of learning about leadership that I’d undergone, it might enable them to challenge their assumptions of what leadership actually is too! My hope was that by helping them to review how they did things in their own practice; they would be able to see how their own leadership had contributed to shaping outcomes. In short, my mission was that by helping professionals to see themselves as leaders, they’d have the confidence to take up a role that they’d previously thought was the preserve of others.
