Case Studies
Dive into real-life scenarios: Explore our collection of case studies from how we’ve helped clients through our leadership training workshops and programmes.
Case Study 1: Reflective Learning Spaces in a Private Higher Education Provider (HEP)
The client, a Private Higher Education Provider, needed ongoing expertise in Leadership and Management to support the delivery of a Level 7 Higher Apprenticeship Scheme for mature learners who have been away from formal education for some time, in small groups.
Despite being in Senior Management roles and being highly proficient in their jobs, they lacked experience in reflecting on their professional practice and were apprehensive about performing at a higher academic level. Success hinged on boosting their confidence to meet satisfaction, progression, and OFSTED targets crucial for maintaining the institution’s reputation and securing future funding.
We offered support through Reflective Learning Spaces, aiding learners in reflecting on their organizations/industry and understanding how these spaces are managed and led.
We simplified important concepts from the curriculum into Conceptual Frameworks and guided learners through Critical Reflections to connect theory with practice. Written reflections after each session were valuable for working with coaches to gather evidence for portfolios in end-point assessments.
Learners reported feeling more settled into academic life; having a safe-space to learn; being more able to break down the learning material into manageable chunks; feeling less anxious about getting tied up in knots about the concepts and theories; able to apply it in their day-to-day working life for use them in real-time; and better able to frame things to make them better leaders on-the-job
Though confident academically, from learning individually and in groups, they were anxious about using their leadership skills to coordinate and being seen to communicate well with external clients. Getting this right meant finding a way to grow their interpersonal skills as they prepared to enter into new working relationships with external stakeholders.
We provided tailored personal and professional support through specialised Know-How Workshops, both online and in-person. These workshops aimed to help learners integrate their existing knowledge with effective leadership and management skills in new situations. We blended practical insights with reflective exercises, allowing learners to share their own experiences safely. Sessions were recorded for those unable to attend live.
The client reported learners being able to safely build their industry know-how, at the same time as practice using their knowledge to work with others in teams. Critical reflections on their own contributions allowed them to consider the personal and interpersonal factors that shape their interactions with others in the past, and build their confidence about their capacity to achieve this in new contexts.
Case Study 2: Know-How Workshops in a Russell Group HEP
The client, a Russell Group university, needed comprehensive employability skills training for a range of postgraduate taught and postgraduate research programs. The training aimed to support international learners who were unfamiliar with the UK job market.
Case Study 3: Know-How Workshops for Senior Leader Apprentices in a Post-92 Higher Education Provider (HEP)
The client, A mid-size Post-92 University, needed swift turnaround support to enhance learner engagement and progression metrics on a high-profile Apprenticeship programme that was receiving frequent complaints and premature exits, with financial and reputational consequences.
Though highly experienced in-role and interpersonally, learners lacked the opportunity in-programme, to bridge their learning from specific aspects of their practice with the academic insights from the course, leading to low satisfaction on programme and disengagement from studies. Success hinged on providing tailored opportunities for growth and development.
We offered pedagogic support to solve the problem of disengagement by designing critically reflexive exercises that required them to reflect on highly specific live-examples of their practice and connect it to theoretical frameworks involving leadership, strategy, culture and change concepts.
Learners reported being more able to reflect deeply on how they were using their leadership practice to respond to complex challenges at work, making them more likely to turn to it as a process of learning in times of need. Satisfaction levels went up significantly with 100% progression to 2nd year, reflected in retention metrics.
Despite being technically proficient in their own areas of management operationally, strategically they lacked the insight into each others’ roles and responsibilities to understand the impact that their working in silo’s was having on the different parts of the business and its long term success.
We provided a safe-space for managers to come together in person to learn more about each others’ professional backgrounds, roles and responsibilities, explore areas of common irritation using learning frameworks designed by us to help them make sense of the impact of different decisions.
Managers built their cultural capability by being more able to communicate their ideas and concerns to each other across teams, resulting in them being more invested in the shared outcome, one of which involved them going on to form a significant partnership with another healthcare business shortly afterwards.
Case Study 4: Critically Reflexive Learning Spaces for a Third Sector Healthcare Provider
The client, a small Third Sector Healthcare Provider, needed support with developing their small group of Middle Managers who came from different professional backgrounds and were struggling culturally, to secure the necessary buy-in from each others’ teams that would enable them to go for new business, form new partnerships and make much needed efficiencies in their departments.
Case Study 5: Expert Facilitation for Senior Managers on a Public Sector Residential in-house Leadership Development Scheme
The client, a large Post 92 University, needed expert facilitators for a high-profile client who was running a short intensive in-person event for a 2 year Leadership Development Programme that was designed to assist Senior Managers to transition into more Senior Leadership roles and who wanted them to know the latest models in Leadership & Partnerships.
Though highly experienced Senior Professionals in-role, they had lacked the opportunity thus far, to practice using their relational and political skills in real-life situations and lacked confidence in dealing with complex negotiations involving parties from competing factions.
Working collaboratively with other expert facilitators, both before and during the programme, and from deep-listening to learners’ needs and challenges in role during the programme, we worked reflexively to adapt the design of the existing programme to ensure relevance to each incoming cohort, to ensure it reflected their lived-experience of issues.
Learners were fully engaged in a range of real-life simulations involving complex challenges including an international negotiation in partnership with other colleagues from different departments, and a mock-negotiation involving them taking up chairing, facilitation and monitoring roles.
